Director – Technical Accounting

Description:

The Director, Accounting Policy is a self-motivated, subject matter expert for technical accounting research and application for The Company. S/he will anticipate and promptly respond to business partner and financial accounting and reporting needs. The Director, Technical Accounting will analyze new and emerging accounting and reporting rules facing the Company under GAAP (FASB, SEC, AICPA) and insurance statutory principles (NAIC accounting, securities valuation office and risk-based capital developments) as well as researching current rules for application to significant Company transactions (e.g., investment, reinsurance, and corporate transactions as well as new products). S/he will join an accounting policy team and collaborate to support responsibilities, share and develop accounting and reporting expertise, and focus on continuous improvement for a high-performance technical accounting team. The Director will independently interact with internal clients and have skills to identify salient facts, research and analyze accounting requirements, and document clear analysis and conclusions. S/he will use this position to develop industry contacts and his/her reputation, as well as The Company's, as a respected participant in industry accounting issues.

The Company is proud to offer a hybrid work location model that is designed to support flexibility. Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday are designated as enterprise core days, when they expect most employees in hybrid work arrangements to come to the Hartford area office.


Responsibilities:

  1. • Monitor new accounting and reporting rules facing the Company under GAAP (FASB, SEC, AICPA) and insurance statutory principles (NAIC accounting, securities valuation office and risk-based capital developments)
  2. • Guide implementation of new accounting pronouncements
  3. • Research, analyze and document the accounting for new transactions
  4. • Revise Company financial reports and disclosures for the effect of new accounting, Company accounting policy and transactions
  5. • Assist in quarterly external GAAP and statutory reporting activities, as needed
  6. • Coordinate and draft Company comment letters on proposed accounting and reporting rules
  7. • Develop relationships with accounting policy representatives at other companies

Requirements:

  1. • CPA with minimum five to seven years of public accounting experience required. Big 4 experience preferred
  2. • Deep technical accounting knowledge including experience documenting and researching technical accounting answers required
  3. • Effective written and verbal communication skills; experience communicating with executive level leadership required

Salary:

$150,000 - $180,000 + 20% Target Bonus + 10% Long-term incentive compensation
